Only a tiny fraction of the world’s population will ever discover this book. And here you are reading it. What are the odds? Aren’t you lucky?
David Elikwu – Sovereign
I was lucky enough to receive an advance copy of Sovereign, which comes out today. David describes it as ‘a guide to building a self-directed life’. It’s a book bursting with energy and ideas.
Elikwu draws inspiration from an eclectic range of sources – from ancient philosophers to the world of 21st century fashion; from literary modernism and the arts to science and warfare; from sport to tech to business; and best of all from his own rich journey. Along the way he reminds us that in life’s capricious ocean, sovereignty consists in learning to surf: ‘[not] in the illusion of total control, but in the ability to navigate uncertainty, seize opportunities, and make the most of whatever hand you’re dealt.’
Hannah Arendt wrote that the hallmark of human existence is break out of the circular movements of biological life:
Whenever men pursue their purposes, tilling the effortless earth, forcing the free-flowing wind into their sails, crossing the ever-rolling waves, they cut across a movement which is purposeless and turning within itself… The subject matter of history is these interruptions – the extraordinary, in other words.
Hannah Arendt – Between Past and Future
David puts it differently, no less poetically but with a touch more grit:
Destiny doesn’t fall from the sky – it bursts from the earth – from soil tilled with human hands.
